2013 Super Puma helicopter crash: Guardian article

I agree.

Also, what is pretty sad is (as far as I recall) Norway flies the same choppers for more hours each year and has far less incidents. Clearly something is not quite right with the UK sector in that respect. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has intervened and made some further recommendations to try and improve safety. Seating number reductions (whereby people must be seated next to a means of escape from 1st June) is one of them.

Unfortunately, damage has already been done... it'll take years to convince offshore workers (those on the Rigs/Platforms) that flying choppers in the UK sector is safe once more.

some questions

1) is there a standard salary per year? and the daily rates per project are additional to this salary? if yes, how much is this salary about?

No. It varies significantly by area of the world, the country of origin of the company you are working for and your nationality.

2) are the money earned offshore subject to tax?
Generally yes. There are very few LEGAL ways of not paying any tax. Again, each country has its own tax laws. Here in the UK if you work onboard ships and spend > 6 months a year outside the UK you may be able to claim your tax back.

3) how many days do projects run? how many projects are per year?
Between 1 day to 365 days. This is an impossible question to answer, there are so many areas in the world I doubt anyone has counted them.

4) is there an age after which you are too old to enter this industry?
Yes, when you can no longer pass your offshore survival or medical.

5) what qualifications/experience would be most beneficial to get a ROV job as a trainee?
Hands on technical qualifications and experience. Companies do not take on trainees who already have experience in ROVs. They take on technically qualified and experienced people who can repair and maintain the equipment. Learning how to operate the ROVs begins ONCE you have the job.

Some Training Schools take on butchers, bakers and taxi drivers and charge them a fortune for a bit of paper which counts for very little unless you have the above suitable technical background.

HNC level is appropriate, Degrees are less useful - you do not learn to solder with a Degree for example. We are generally there to repair and maintain, not design ROVs.

unfortunately I don't have any engineering experience at all, neither engineering qualifications

I 've done alot of research and I 've contacted almost every company, without any luck

I know I should have some experience, but I hoped I could gain it inside the industry, instead of receiving training eg. in a factory and then search for a ROV position

Thanks for that, yep my CV is complicated. I originally completed a City and Guilds Electronics Servicing Course/ Apprenticeship and worked as an Engineer for 10 years. I have been a Physics A-Level/BTEC Level 2 Engineering teacher for the last few years and been a Teacher for the last 7 years in total, before that I worked as a postgraduate pioneering the development archival heartrate monitiors to be used on animals. We managed to develop the smallest in the world etc etc., we eventually put them onto penguins and were in the process of integrating GPS transponders, so I do have some recent experience. Do you think I should do a few HNC modules i.e, Mechatronics or book a course at Fortwilliam?

We are working on a site upgrade. It's not going to produce far reaching changes, but will be an overall positive improvement.

The upgrade has already been tested on a test site with favourable results.

Even so, if things go a little whacky in the process just bear with us eh?
We'll be working behind the scenes to get anything that breaks back into working order Smile

If you did have an accident after those kind of hours, then I doubt if you would have a leg to stand on Wink

Actually (in the UK for example) the employer has duty of care to it's employees under a working time directive 1998. Argue the toss about contractors v employees as much as you wish.. IMHO The courts would view anyone to be working as an employee and offer them the protection of the law in that respect.

In the UK.
Quote:
Daily rest
Under the Working Time Regulations 1998, regulation 10, a worker is entitled to a rest period of 11 consecutive hours rest in each 24 hour period during which he works for his employer.

There are 'get out' clauses such as change of shift etc. but in the case of an incident UK courts would also wish the employer to demonstrate that they are consciously doing their best to comply with the working time directive. If it can be demonstrated that they continuously ignore the directive then they'll be in trouble!

So, I would suggest that if there was an accident attributed to tiredness and it was discovered that the company knowingly kept you on the go for as long as you mention then they would also be held liable.

As for maximum travel hours... I think it's a grey area and only defined in company travel policy (if at all) and not legislated upon by HSE. HSE where? Would be my next question... UK? Thailand? Congo?

Now back to the real world.

1) Ask whom ever arranges your travel to include a break in your itinerary for the reasons you have stated. Send your concerns by email and keep the response, which might be along similar lines to the recent American Airways tweeted customer support response!

2) Keep a travel log (or at least all you tickets stubs as proof of travel) in case anything untoward happens.

3) Make too much noise and you'll likely not get any travel information from that company in future, so it'll no longer be an issue! Such is offshore/ROV style life.

Hi all,

I have just been contacted by a client who is urgently looking for a Senior Pilot Tech / Sub Eng with Well Intervention Experience to travel to Egypt within the next 2 days to undertake a 28 day trip.

Owing to the short lead in period, candidates based in Europe or North Africa are preferred.

The ROV in use is a Triton XLS. Experience on this ROV is preferred, but - at this late stage - WROV experience and a good hydraulic / mechanical skill set will be gratefully received.

The vessel is a DSV built in 1987, and the SOW will be Well Ops / Well Intervention.

If anybody is available for work and looking for get offshore as soon as possible, please forward me your up to date CV & Certs (wbest@atlasprofessionals.com). I will endeavour to call you this evening but, failing that, I will email back / call tomorrow.
