The problem is that there is (was) money to be made in convincing clients they need to specify 'ABC' course or qualification to minimise their exposure

IMCA for all the right reasons gave the industry its guidelines, unfortunately these guidelines have been used to establish competency benchmarks

The industry has practically 'disqualified' many 'decades experienced' and proven people and set a horrible 'paper is everything' and 'experience is nothing'

The danger being some 'paper correct' offshore person is considered ready for the job...whereas someone who has been doing the job for years is 'out of spec'

Personally I think that people should be trained, tested and given authority over job sites when they have sufficient experience

I take great exception to being told that I need to constantly subscribe to a scheme that documents my 'competence' for something I have done for decades

Whatever happened to 'your as good as your last job'....that's the true test..

For all those with competency up to date...the next 'method to make money' will make what you have now worthless

Then you too will feel as we older (experienced) people do

What really gets up my 'tits' is that they ask a line manager to sign off when they are NOT offshore and have no idea what a person can or can't do

I have been in management and I read the CV, talked to the person, asked if they were comfortable and if so gave them the opportunity... that works

If they didn't work out then I simply replaced them for justifiable reasons...

I go to my doctor who trained 30 years ago and he takes care of me without some 'chap' in city hall asking if he understands basic medicine

By all means have H2S courses (and cards), have factory training on specific types of ROV's (and cards) but please NO IMCA cards

I totally agree with training and a certificate at the end of it...

Your a trade organisation keep it that way...

Please tell all of your members

THERE IS NO IMCA ROV CARD AND PLEASE READ PEOPLES CV'S AND SEE WHAT QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE THEY HAVE

As a last point;

All the companies offering competency schemes did nothing wrong

They just found a niche market and with the best of intentions set it all up

I just wish they had set up training schools instead

In my view,

TRAINED, TESTED, QUALIFIED AND PRESUMED COMPETENT IS A BETTER WAY

The establishment of the success criteria (things that people should be able to do) is subjective but arguably the IMCA competencies maybe correct

The problem is in the manner in which the competencies are supposed to be developed, recorded and their finite validity period (if no work for example)

The 'method' stated in the competency documents is simply not viable anymore; it was ok when done in-house or when things were very busy but NOT now

IMCA needs to consider the impact of this on the Industry and suggest a better way (just as they did when they published competency framework)

I suggest that IMCA supersedes the IMCA competency guidance with a simple IMCA membership card guidance

The membership card ( I say it this way as its less contentious) would be similar to offshore medical and survival cards (plastic credit card sized)

ONLY IMCA WOULD ISSUE THESE CARDS

It should record the three key aspects from the persons submitted CV and declaration (as part of the membership application process)

1. number days offshore
2. number of piloting hours
3. number days offshore in position

It should be issued by IMCA for a total price of less than USD 50-100 and can be updated as and when a person/member feels the need

The 'membership fees' would pay for the administrator for this aspect and the cards themselves

================================================
IMCA ROV SUPERVISOR CARD

NUMBER >> 16-08972

ISSUED >> 01 JAN 2016

NAME >> Mr Jack Russell
DOB >> 01 Jan 1990

TOTAL DAYS OFFSHORE >> 792
TOTAL PILOTING HOURS >> 196
TOTAL DAYS OFFSHORE AS ROV SUPERVISOR >> 250

This card is issued based on declared Information from Jack Russell as reviewed by IMCA

============================

In my view,

PRIOR to anyone paying any money for the suggested 'membership card' (with work related data)...

IMCA needs to issue guidelines that categorically explains to its contractor members that these membership cards are intended to confirm that a person has proven experience/competence in the specific role

Importantly that the card replaces the need to refer to expired 'competency records' or fictitious IMCA certificates

When the person goes offshore the safety officer can ask to see Survival Card, Medical Card and IMCA Card

These will verify the person is trained re survival, medically fit and has past experience at the position he/she is going to do (or at least in the role they will supervise)

It is using proven performance offshore and past work as the basis for issuing a 'statement of fact'

This 'method' removes any liability issues

Most importantly when we all get asked for IMCA certification we have it

Obviously employers should look in detail at the CV of the person to see if the experience (and training) fits the system and job scope...but it’s a start

My belief is that the vast majority of people that have been offshore for a reasonable period of time and performed the work at a certain level can be assumed competent

The CV is ultimately proof that your contractor members have previously entrusted a certain aspect of their contract, equipment, personnel and reputation to the person in question…

What else is there?

The good thing about this is in a time where people have no work and can’t continue to pay to be recertified they can have an IMCA certificate (in card form) which documents accurately what they have proven they can do

IMCA can also explain to contractor members what a 'real IMCA card looks like' and to ignore anything counterfeit

Anyone that reads the IMCA card will get a quick snapshot of what the person has done in the past

Well the latest on the shenanigans of the pair of shits that run energy subsea...

They are currently on a job in Indonesia, based out of Makassar on the island of South Sulawesi, working for a company called BNP, on a ship called CS Nusantara Explorer (ex European Supporter).

They have been down there since February and have had 6 PT's come and go without pay, with the average trip being 7 weeks....

WARNING.... So Not work for these guys... They will not pay you, EVER...

Been asked for these for non wind farm work. Anyone else encountered this or any problems with the GWO money spinner? Are these GWO certs required for wind farm work outside of UK waters?

Thanks

Hi K2

I did speak to Søren Sejer Gøtzsche Communications Advisor at GWO a few weeks ago regarding GWO certs for ROV and UAV work and was told this the whole thing seems to be a Gray area when it comes to Rov or UAV since in both cases you are not in direct physical contact with a wind turbine , I did tell the guy of all my Opito courses that I had done This was his reply : -

Thank you for your e-mail.

To answer your question, I refer to our FAQ:

I have completed similar or even better safety-training courses in the past; can I use them instead of the Basic Safety Training Standard?

If you have physical contact with a turbine, your employers’ answer should clearly be “NO”.

The basic safety training standard has been developed in the absence of other relevant and recognized standard safety training, and in addition to addressing the main safety risks of working in the wind industry, standardization offers several benefits to your employers safety systems.

Common safety training standards greatly reduces complexity in site management systems and reduces the compliance costs of repeated employee/contractor verification checks.

For personnel working on wind projects without direct physical contact with a wind turbine, your employer may deem that your current skills are adequate. Examples could for instance include crew personnel on vessels operating on offshore wind project, and where mandatory safety training has been completed.

It is always your employer who decide what training you must have in order to complete a specific task, not GWO.

The GWO courses are all designed for people working in or on a wind turbine and are required to be trained in in order to do specific tasks. As stated in the FAQ, people who do not have physical contact with a wind turbine may have the adequate skills for the task. Again, it is the sole decision of your employer but there are no courses designed for Rov or UAV operators by GWO.

I hope that answers your questions and you are always welcome to contact me if you have any further questions.

Best regards

If you look at the format for all these courses OPITO , GWO and STCW ok with the GWO course you have to climb all over the wind turbine other wise the format is very much the same , Same goes for the cost over well over a £1000 + and I bet that every 3 or 4 years you need to do a re-fresher . The problem is there is no cross-recognition between OPITO (for the Oil & Gas Offshore Industry) , MCA (STCW) (for the Maritime Industry) and GWO For Offshore Wind Power . Should this be the case I can see Free Lance personnel ceasing because who on earth can pay out every 4 years about £4000 with the current day rates that are on offer plus all the other basic requirements like MIST and HV certs .

In some cases the Clients requirements are almost impossible to fill , Must hold Work Visa ,Then Inspection Certs like 3.4U , Competence Cert with 10 years Experience then just when you have ticket all the boxes they tell you Max age is 55 .

I have not come across any projects that require a GWO cert on a non wind farm job from my experience if your OPITO certs are in date your good to go . I wonder what's going to happen once we leave the EU ?

Yes its the same as what the letter says from GWO but clients seem to want every thing now days , For years I chased certs and just when you thought you had a full set someone would bring out some new requirement .

Lets face it we go out there to the wind farm on a boat and launch the rov from that vessel in the same way I would launch a UAV to inspect the blades on the turbine , We dont go any were near the Turbine . Oh yes there is a inspect course for blade uk@altitec.co.uk and part one will set you back about £1000 + VAT , I dont mine paying out for courses like that but see no reason to pay for the GWO or the STCW because we dont leave the vessel plus we are not ships crew but I have seen more and jobs requiring Rov personnel to have a GWO course . At this rate I can see free lance personnel becoming extinct due to the overall cost .

I am wondering whats going to happen if and when we leave the EU will we need to have extra certs to cover that country ? Just think of the energy industry as a big Cow and every body wants a piece of the action .

There are some companies out there with good training programs but until the industry begins expanding there isn't much opportunity.

Well matey, You won't be doing yourself any favors undercutting the rates.
Although I no longer work in the ROV industry I would suggest you won't make many friends do that either.
Unless you have a good back ground in hydraulics or electronics or both it may be rather difficult to "get in"

I do not want to undercut the rate. It's just like a deal between me and company trained me )
I have electrical background and few years of experience at sea.

Working with a GWO Survival is an expensive option for freelance ROV Crew compared to Opito Bosiet / Foet.

GWO is twice the price can cost over 1500 GBP taking separately the 5 modules and is 6 days long. is around 1200 GBP booking a 6 day course same time.

Is Valid for 2 years!!!!!!

Can be renewed but takes several days to do a renewal.

how many days I am not sure but its 1 day to renew working at height one module
then there is the other 4 modules to renew.

And depending where you live there is less of these course running and no schedules for easy renewal or even to take the course in the first place.

Its an industry better suited for employee's

As I have never been offered a decent rate from that industry in the last few years and they always wanted LTD invoice or taxed and before that years ago was sometimes on CIS only the rates have always been lower than other ROV works in OIL or Telecoms.

I have tried to solve this too. As an ROV guy I can't imagine a scenario where you would require a GWO cert of any kind, except possibly the First aid, if you had an Opito Bosiet. Working at heights and rescue at heights is a complete money spinner and can't be justified in anyway other than financial racketeering.
Perhaps we should also hold diving certs as the ROV is underwater!

This situation needs resolving. Perhaps IMCA could offer some guidance, although I doubt that as they will not commit to anything either!

Boro,
Deep Trekker ROVs are affordable, small, completely portable (battery powered), and extremely robust. Tank inspection is one of the best tasks for the DTG2 ROV, here's an example video: https://youtu.be/NnMsUqIx4vc
Let me know if you have any questions, or you can check out our website: https://www.deeptrekker.com/dtg2/

Hi all, I am new to forum, and I have a question that is simillar to Sergio's. I just finnished my mechanical engineering studies, for, energetics and process engineering and I would like to work as an rov operator / technician (rather), or any other job that allows you to work for one month and be free for one month. I have a pretty good theoretical background in hydraulics but I have zero experience in industrial hydraulics, and good experience in home plumming if that counts. My knowledge in electrics is pretty good, but in digital electronics very poor. So far I made the conclusion that my chances of getting a job are somwere between impossible and almost impossible, but I would like to hear an opinion of good people from the forum who know something about getting a job. Sorry if there were English / grammar mistakes.

Hi Vuk,

You are welcome

As I said your engineering qualification is a great achievement

Try to find an industry that can make good use of it

You put time to get it now you need time for it to grow

Try go work as graduate/trainee engineer in an established company

By established look for one that can't ship its factory/jobs overseas

Generally that will mean something local and critical to infrastructure

Examples would be at a power station or public transport maintenance depot

Good luck
